Youth Development Research

Act for Youth's power point on Youth Development Research was very insightful. “We need to provide opportunities to all young people.” I found this to be very insightful. Observing in classrooms I have noticed that educators have a different approach to student’s that are above the normal academic level compared to low below the academic level. Students above the academic norm get special treatment of choosing to and how to complete assignments. Students below the academic norm are expected to complete the assignment even if they don’t meet the academic level the assignment entails. Through the Youth Development Research provided by ACT we as Youth Development educators can help use positive Youth Development. Positive Youth Development doesn’t focus solely on the youth but the environment the Youth is involved in. The community and adults also influence the Youth’s Development in positive and or negative. We as YD educators promote “competencies values and connections that will build up strengths.” ACT’s research finds that we are switching from troubled youth to all youth and that is truly the most important information. Having the understanding that academics can always be improved by any student’s level. We as YD educators need to make sure we let the individuals we are educating be involved in how they learn and develop. We will help develop positive opportunities for youth’s and their community. YD educators will always help Youth in the community to grow positive relationships, values and develop skills that the student will utilize for the rest of their lives. As YD that will be the goal to help youth long after you are no longer educating.

  1. I completely agree with what you said about educators and the differential treatment in classrooms. Also I agree if we can focus on the environment we can help fix so many social problems that restrict the youth from succeeding.

  3. "We as YD educators need to make sure we let the individuals we are educating be involved in how they learn and develop. I think we also need to help individuals and the way in which they learn and develop.

  4. I agree with what you said in this post. However I don't understand how we need to be concerned with what the school system does as I feel we are here to guide them to become the over achiever's in school. I don't think that we will ever be able to change the school system but I do think we can change the students.
